Bishkek Solid Waste - Feasibility Study

STELLA has carried out a baseline study of the current solid waste management system in the city of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. This study included a fleet assessment and vehicle inventory, an assessment of hazardous waste management practices, a measure of the quantity and composition of biogas at the landfill and an analysis of the predicted greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and assessment of the impact of proposed biogas utilization measures. The baseline study also included assessing the technical feasibility of various treatment options (recovery, biological treatment, MBT, thermal treatment) to recommend a treatment facility for Bishkek. STELLA also assessed the different alternatives for rehabilitating and expanding the current dumpsite and for constructing a new landfill. On this basis, STELLA prepared a detailed investment programme to acquire collection vehicles, build sorting stations, close the existing dumpsite, and open a new sanitary landfill. STELLA also carried out a scoping study of Environmental Impact Assessment activities and prepared an Environmental and Social Action Plan, to develop an Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan. STELLA provided the solid waste management expert and the environmental expert for this project financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
