STELLA carries out Natura 2000 Award local events

Currently we are supporting the 2014 Natura 2000 Award winners in organising local events to celebrate the prize and raise awareness about Natura 2000 locally.  These events are considered by local stakeholders as an endorsement by the EC and extremely useful in promoting positive messages about the winners’ achievements and Natura 2000 in general.  So far, STELLA has assisted in implementing events in Spain, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

The Spanish local event was held on the 23rd of July 2014 and celebrated the Natura 2000 Award presented to EUROPARC-Spain and Castilla-La Mancha, winners of the Networking & Cross-Border Cooperation category.  The event was held in Sigüenza (Guadalajara, Spain).  The programme included a guided tour of the Natura 2000 sites, and a press conference and reception at El Parador de Sigüenza, a medieval castle.  Speeches were delivered by Mr. Carles Castell Puig, President of EUROPARC-Spain, Mr. Stefan Leiner from the European Commission’s DG Environment, and Ms. María Luisa Soriano Martín, Minister for Agriculture of Castilla-La Mancha.

On the 12th of September 2014, the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic (NCA CR) hosted their event for stakeholders, local authorities and Commission representatives to celebrate their winning of the 2014 Natura 2000 Award in the Communication category.  The event was held at the NCA CR premises in Litoměřice.  The programme included site visits to the winning Natura 2000 sites, as well as speeches by Mr. Stefan Leiner from DG Environment and Mr. František Pelc from NCA CR.  The event was organised as part of the local gardening and fruit/vegetables exhibition Zahrada Cech which takes place in Litoměřice every year.

On the 20th of September 2014, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds / Birdlife Bulgaria (BSPB) hosted an event in Topolovgrad (Haskovo province, South-eastern Bulgaria), to celebrate winning the Conservation Award.  The event was part of the Festival of traditional local products and the imperial eagle.  It took place in the town park and it was open to the public, with a stage in the middle of the park surrounded by stands presenting regional products (e.g., fruits, vegetables, herbs, pastries, honey, wine, handicrafts, etc).  In addition, folklore groups entertained the audience with traditional dance and music.  Special guests included Ms. Pia Bucella, Director of Directorate B Natural Capital of DG Environment, and Mr. Vladimir Donchev, Deputy Minister of Environment and Water.  Around 400 people attended the event.
